“Precision and Power: What Shooting Taught Me about Focus“
Among the quiet hobbies of my life, there is one that often surprises people when I mention it:
Shooting.
Yes, at a shooting range.
And no, this hobby didn’t start when I lived in the U.S., where it’s more common. It actually came from something deeper—a desire to sharpen my focus, to discipline my mind, and to feel the rhythm of stillness in a new way.
I believe that every meaningful hobby teaches us something about life.
And shooting, while it may seem intense or even unconventional to some, has become a metaphor for clarity, control, and presence.
At the range, everything slows down.
There’s no room for distractions.
You breathe with intention.
You align your vision.
You steady your hands.
And in that moment—there is only you, your breath, and the target.
I’ve only been to the range a couple of times, but the experience stays with me. I still remember one of the instructors telling me, with a surprised look,
“It’s like you’ve been doing this for a while—your score was excellent.”
And I smiled and replied, “This is only my second time.”
He was stunned.
Honestly, I was a little stunned, too. Can you imagine how my result will be if I am making this hobby as regular? I could be a sniper…lol
Maybe I do have a natural talent for it.
But more than skill, what shooting awakened in me was focus with joy—the thrill of hitting the centre, the sense of accomplishment when discipline pays off, the satisfaction of harnessing energy into precision.
Aside from focus, shooting has taught me:
- Patience – Rushing the shot only means missing the mark. Just like in life.
- Self-regulation – Emotions must be balanced. Your body still. Your mind clear.
- Responsibility – Power requires respect. Handling a tool like this reminds me to move with intention and care.
Every time I hold that space; I’m not just firing at a target. I’m training myself to be present, to aim at life with steadiness, to understand that discipline can be exhilarating.
So yes, it thrills me when I hit the centre.
But more than that, I love what shooting teaches me about myself.
In the end, it’s not about the weapon.
It’s about alignment.
The power of one steady breath.
One clear goal.
One moment of absolute focus.
